Includes part one, 1813-1814, of Hastings' private journal, later edited and published by his daughter, the Marchioness of Bute (London, 1858). Contains a review of Hastings' ideas about British policy in India and detailed descriptions of his travels there, including some accounts not contained in the published version. Also present are a few miscellaneous itesm of personal and political correspondence, including letters, 1818, to Earl Mountcashell concerning patronage in India and to Leicester Stanhope and Admiral Sir Henry Blackwood on the political and military situation in India.
